“Lena the Hyena” portrait on the cover of Mad magazine #11, 1954 by Basil Wolverton

“Lena the Hyena” was a character in Al Capp’s very popular comic strip called Li’l Abner. Lena was sooo ugly that anyone who saw her was immediately driven mad. No sane person, therefore, could tell you what she looked like. In the forties, Capp ran a nation-wide contest to see who could draw the ugliest Lena. Basil Wolverton won hands down.
